BSL Airport 2023

Basel-Moulhouse-Freiburg Airport

For the third year in a row in May, runway maintenance work was carried out at Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport.

A total of 25 concrete slabs on the airport's runway were replaced in 2023.

The work begins at 11 p.m. and a minimum compressive strength of 20 MPa must be achieved by 5 a.m. Thanks to the use of Concretum's rapid-hardening concrete, produced at Holcim's concrete batching plant, the concrete slabs are replaced within a 6-hour window. Holcim's concrete mixing plant is about 30 minutes drive from the airport. Thanks to the addition of a retarder, Concretum's rapid-hardening concrete remains workable for up to 2 hours, which enables the production and installation of large quantities of rapid-hardening concrete. This guarantees quality and durability.

Thanks to the use of rapid-hardening concrete, the runway can be reopened the next day, at five in the morning, without affecting air traffic at the airport.
