EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg

Renovation of the runway

In two weeks of night work, 21 concrete slabs were renovated on the runway of EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. A total of 330m3 of Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 high early strength concrete was placed by WALO Bertschinger to replace 840m2 of damaged concrete.

Construction process

The demolition of the damaged section of runway begins at 11 p.m. after the last aircraft has landed. As soon as the demolition is complete, the concrete is produced at the Holcim concrete plant in Birsfelden. It is then transported to the runway (transport time around 20 minutes). The workability time of the concrete is 90 minutes and is sufficient for transport and installation. When the hardening reaction starts, the concrete reaches a strength of 20 MPa in about an hour. At 5 a.m. the runway is set back to operation again. Thanks to the Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 high early strength concrete, Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport can carry out maintenance and rehabilitation work without affecting air traffic.
