Melbourne Airport (MEL)

After successful trials in 2022, Melbourne Airport (MEL) decided to use our rapid-hardening concrete Q-FLASH 2/20 for the airfield maintenance in 2023.

Over the course of several months and in total 150 nightshifts, 6000 m3 of Q-FLASH 2/20 was placed. The fluctuating air temperature ranging from 6 to 30 degrees Celsius was a challenge during the project. Due to the concrete's rapid strength development, the rehabilitated areas could be reopened to the air traffic early in the morning as originally planned, resulting in minimal disruption to the air traffic. After intensive support from Concretum in the beginning of the project, the following replacements on site were done independently. Thanks to the close cooperation, it was possible to ensure and coordinate the support and logistics smoothly.

The concrete (35 m3 per slab) was produced on site with six concrete volumetric trucks at the same time. The requirements for the reopening of the airfield were achieved in 4 hours after production.

Thanks to our partners Fulton Hogan and Eifers for the exceptional collaboration. We are looking forward to future projects at Melbourne Airport (MEL) and throughout Australia in the near future.
