Reconstruction of A1 in Lower Austria

Initial situation

Austria has an extensive motorway network that largely consists of concrete road surfaces. In many sections the traffic volume is high even outside rush hour, so closing individual lanes can lead to traffic jams. For this reason, necessary reconstruction work is often undertaken in short closures at night or between rush hours.
Concrete plants are only rarely directly next to the sections being repaired, which can result in transport times of up to 60 minutes. As the fields to be reached by a mixer truck may also be up to one kilometre apart, open times of up to 2 hours are required.

Solution concept

In order to minimize the closure times of the individual lanes, rapid-hardening concretes such as Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 are used in the area of concrete pavement reconstruction. The concrete can be adjusted by the specialists from Concretum AG so that the consistency required by the
site and the required open times are complied with, while at the same time the required
strengths of 20 N/mm2 are reliably reached one hour after the start of hardening.
For pouring in the Altlengbach area, an open time of 110 to 120 minutes was set. Another 60 minutes later, i.e. at a total age of 3 hours, the concrete Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 already had a compressive strength of 36 N/mm2 and the lane just reconstructed could already be opened to traffic.
The favourable location of the concrete plant for another deployment close to Melk allowed the open time to be reduced to 90 minutes and the waiting time at the construction site to be kept short thanks to the short travel time of the mixer truck, thereby ensuring that the lanes could be opened within the specified times.
Thanks to the close and seamless cooperation of all participants, it was possible to complete both projects to the full satisfaction of the clients reliably and without great traffic disruptions.
With the rapid-hardening concrete Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20, a technology is available, which allows concrete slabs of heavily used motorways to be replaced rapidly and flexibly, reliably and permanently.
