Reconstruction of runway, Zurich Airport

Initial situation

As part of the runway renovations at Zurich Airport, concrete slabs with a total volume of 1,500 m3 were replaced. Conventionally, air operations would have had to be suspended for a substantially longer period because of the numerous operational and safety requirements. To minimise disruption, over the past 10 years, the relevant operational transport surfaces at Zürich Airport have been reconstructed using rapid-hardening concrete.
Runway reconstruction took place in the summer and autumn months with fresh concrete temperatures from 18 °C to 33 °C and above. To ensure flexibility and not to hinder work on other parts of the Zurich Airport, the largest proportion of the concrete was produced in a concrete plant in Bülach.

Solution and assessment

By choosing Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20, the concrete reached the required strength of 16 N/mm2 after just two hours and yet could still be worked for 60 – 90 minutes with a constant flow spread of approx. 40 cm. These material qualities ultimately, and despite the high and low temperatures and the longer transport distances, led to the runway being renovated reliably. In addition, the waiting time between concreting and grooving joint sealing was reduced considerably thanks to the use of Concretum® Q- FLASH 2/20.
