Germany has an extensive motorway network with a large proportion of concrete roads. Some sections are affected by very high traffic volumes, which leads to heavy annual wear of the concrete slabs and to edge breakages. In addition, blow-ups occur, which can form in summer in some sections. The resulting damaged areas have to be repaired in order to prevent further damage and to guarantee safety on the motorway.
The closure periods here have to be kept as short as possible in order to minimise traffic disruption. This requires the concrete being used to harden extremely quickly. Ideally, the work is undertaken at night or between rush hours.
On the A93, the fact that the journeys from the concrete plant sometimes took up to one hour also had to be considered, along with the fact that the individual areas to be repaired may be several kilometres apart. This required a precise and variably adjustable open time for the rapid-hardening concrete.
By using the rapid-hardening concrete Concretum®-Q-FLASH 2/20 the reconstruction of the concrete pavement could be performed without long closure periods. The consistency and open time was continuously adjusted by the specialists from Concretum AG according to the needs of the construction site. Just two hours after the start of hardening, a concrete strength above 20 N/mm2 was achieved and the section could be re-opened to traffic.
The seamless cooperation between all participants, led to the concrete slab replacements successfully taking place within short closure periods overnight or between rush hours.
The rapid-hardening concrete Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 allows a reliable, permanent, and simultaneously, a rapid and flexible reconstruction of heavily frequented concrete motorways.
