Renovation of Bus Stop, Birchdörfli, Zurich

Initial Situation
At the VBZ bus stop Birchdörfli in Zurich, two concrete slabs needed replacement. The road surfaces of bus stops endure significant stress, regularly subjected to heavy loads and intense braking forces. To avoid disrupting bus operations, the renewal of this traffic area was carried out in a single overnight shift.

Solution and Assessment
The fast-hardening concrete Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 was used to replace the roadway slabs. This high-performance quick-setting concrete achieves a compressive strength of 20 N/mm² within one hour of the setting process beginning. To ensure the required volume could be placed flexibly within the open time, the concrete was produced on-site using a truck mixer.

This approach significantly reduced the construction time for the bus slabs compared to conventional concrete. As a result, there were no disruptions for VBZ or its passengers. By early morning, the first bus was able to use the stop according to schedule at 5:15 AM.
