Barcelona Airport is one of the busiest airports in Spain. Its airside pavements are continuously exposed to high mechanical loads as well as changing climatic conditions, while allowable closure windows must be kept to an absolute minimum.
Since 2018, Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) has been successfully using the innovative concrete technology Concretum® Q-CON for localized rehabilitation of heavily loaded concrete pavements. Q-CON is particularly suitable for local repairs such as edge spalling, joint rehabilitation, and isolated distressed areas on aprons, taxiways, and service roads — precisely in locations where maximum load demands coincide with extremely short closure periods.
Concretum® Q-CON achieves high early strength within just a few hours after placement. Its low shrinkage behavior significantly reduces crack formation, while its straightforward handling and workability allow for rapid on-site installation. Consequently, repaired pavement sections can be reopened to traffic within a matter of hours, with minimal disruption to ongoing airport operations.
Long-term application at Barcelona Airport confirms that Q-CON enables efficient, reliable, and durable localized pavement repairs. The technology ensures long-lasting concrete pavements, minimizes the need for subsequent maintenance interventions, and thereby supports the long-term operational safety and efficiency of one of Europe’s most important airports.
