Rehabilitation of the Reuss Bridge in Göschenen

Project Description:

The municipality of Göschenen, located in the canton of Uri, is exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Infrastructure such as the Reuss Bridge in Göschenen requires regular maintenance and rehabilitation. Many of these structures are protected as historic monuments. In order to preserve the structural elements of the bridge while maintaining its historic appearance, a sustainable construction method was implemented.

Original Structure from 1918 – Natural Stone Arch Bridge:
The primary objective was to eliminate severe water infiltration and carry out localized masonry repairs. A comprehensive waterproofing system was applied to the stone arch to ensure structural longevity. The goal was to achieve a remaining service life of at least 80 years before the next major intervention.

Scope of Work

A reinforced concrete slab (ballast trough) was installed beneath the track ballast to serve as a waterproofing layer for the arch vault. The existing ballast and backfill down to the bottom edge of the new concrete slab were removed and rebuilt.

A floating, jointless, and reinforced concrete slab with a pitched profile was installed above the arch and below the ballast. A custom concrete mix was developed for this purpose. Additives included the shrinkage-reducing admixture Concretum® D-SOLO and high-modulus polymer fibers Concretum® SUPERFIBER 40/8. The surface was finished using a wet-on-wet technique to ensure a crack-free cross-section.

The existing sidewalk on the Göschenen side was completely replaced. The new sidewalk was constructed as a cantilevered concrete slab, monolithically connected to the new watertight concrete slab.
