At the VBZ bus stop Birchdörfli in Zurich, two concrete pavement slabs had to be replaced. Pavement structures at bus stops are subjected to particularly high loads. They experience regular exposure to heavy loads and significant braking forces. To avoid disrupting bus operations, the reconstruction of the traffic surface was carried out during a single overnight construction window.
The rapid-hardening concrete Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 was used to replace the roadway slabs. This high-performance rapid-hardening concrete achieves a compressive strength of 20 N/mm² within one hour of the setting process beginning. To ensure the required volume could be placed flexibly within the open time, the concrete was produced on-site using a truck mixer. This approach significantly reduced the construction time for the bus slabs compared to conventional concrete. As a result, there were no disruptions for VBZ or its passengers. By early morning, the first bus was able to use the stop according to schedule at 5:15 AM.
