Renovation of the A23 Highway in Vienna with Q-FLASH 2/20 Rapid-Hardening Concrete

In the first two weeks of June, a significant road surface renovation project was carried out at the Hanssonkurve on the A23 highway in Vienna. In total, 105 m³ of rapid-hardening concrete was used to renovate an area of 420 m² of road surface. The entire project took place at night to minimize traffic disruption. Work on replacing the concrete slabs began at 10:00 PM each night, and by 5:00 AM, the road had to be ready for reopening to traffic. During these seven hours, sections of the road surface were first removed, and then the new concrete was poured. By 5:00 AM, the highway had to be completely reopened for traffic.

Thanks to the use of Concretum Q-FLASH 2/20 rapid-hardening concrete, up to three concrete slabs could be replaced each night. Between 15 and 25 m³ of concrete were placed nightly. The concrete was produced at the Bau Beton batch plant in Semmering, approximately a 15-minute transport time from the project site. The concrete remained workable for about 90 minutes, and just one hour after the start of setting, it reached a compressive strength of approximately 20 MPa, which was sufficient for traffic release.

Thanks to the use of Concretum fast concrete, it was possible to replace up to 75 m² of road surface per night without restricting traffic or causing queues and bottlenecks. The project was made possible by the positive collaboration with HABAU and Bau Beton GmbH
