Fast-drying and shrinkage-reduced – concrete installation in the SBB tunnel at Zurich Airport

Project description

Zurich Airport railway station is one of the busiest transport hubs in Switzerland. In order to carry out urgently needed maintenance and expansion work, SBB closes one track at a time for several weeks. During this time, numerous trades are crowded into a very small space – every process must be perfectly coordinated to ensure that the schedule is adhered to.

Challenge

The requirements are particularly high in the platform area: short construction times, many interfaces and the need to make concrete surfaces usable again quickly. Every day counts in order to make efficient use of the closure period and resume train operations on schedule.

Our solution

  • With the Ebirec concrete plant as our partner, we delivered precisely coordinated mix designs to the closure site.
  • We used our Concretum® D-SOLO admixture – for fast drying and maximum durability in terms of shrinkage.
  • Thanks to our fast-drying and shrinkage-reduced concrete in the platform area, the surfaces could be quickly reworked and released for follow-up work.

Result

The use of our rapid-hardening concrete proved to be a decisive factor in optimising the use of construction time during the closure, which lasted several weeks. What passengers see as a renovated station after the work is completed is in fact the result of highly complex coordination – and concrete solutions that combine speed, precision and quality.
