Eastern Bypass Bad Zurzach

Relocation of SBB Bridge – Eastern Bypass in Bad Zurzach

A new SBB bridge is part of the extensive construction work at the Glocke junction for the Eastern Bypass Bad Zurzach project. As part of this work, the SBB track will be interrupted. The SBB has granted a long weekend closure for this purpose. To make efficient use of this time, work will be carried out continuously - from Friday evening at 10:00 PM until Monday morning at 4:45 AM.

During one weekend in June, the ERNE civil engineering teams successfully relocated a 250-ton SBB bridge within 38 hours. The scope of work included:

  • Dismantling of the SBB track and overhead line
  • Demolition of the existing bridge
  • Installation of the new abutments
  • Relocation of the new SBB bridge
  • Backfilling of the SBB bridge abutments
  • Reinstallation of the track and overhead line

After the demolition of the existing bridge, including both abutments, the new abutments were constructed using Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 SCC rapid-hardening concrete. Just 30 minutes after the start of the setting process, the concrete had gained enough strength to allow the backfilling of the abutments. After another 60 minutes, the concrete had already reached a strength of over 20 N/mm², and the new, heavy bridge deck could be installed. The new bridge has a span of 17 meters and was prefabricated. The roadway transitions of the new bridge were then constructed overnight on Sunday using Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 rapid-hardening concrete. Once again, the fast strength development of the concrete helped ensure that all work could be completed within the scheduled time window.
