When air traffic at Zurich Airport temporarily eases at night, only a few hours remain for work on the critical runway infrastructure. Under these tight conditions, the runway threshold at the southern end of Runway 14/32 was rehabilitated in 2023.
On an area of approximately 1,000 m², the existing asphalt pavement was replaced section by section with a concrete overlay. Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 was used to ensure the required early load-bearing capacity and reliable reopening within the narrow closure windows.
All works were carried out exclusively during six-hour night windows over a period of one to two weeks. Around 70 m³ of concrete were placed per night. Each section required precise planning, coordination, and execution to guarantee that the runway could be reopened fully operational by morning.
Concretum provided application support throughout the project – from aligning the material concept with Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20, optimizing the mix design, to quality assurance at the batching plant and on site. The focus was on safe, reproducible execution under tight schedules and active air traffic.
