Between June and October 2022, maintenance works were carried out on runway 28-10 at Zurich Airport, as well as on various aprons and taxiways. In total, work was performed over more than 30 nights. Two different contractors (KIBAG and the joint venture ARGE Midnightforce) executed the works, with over 1500 m3 of Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 rapid-hardening concrete produced at two different batching plants (KIBAG and Eberhard Bau AG).
The works start around 11 p.m., after the last aircraft has landed. Once the removal of the deteriorated pavement is completed, the concrete is produced at the Ebirec batching plant in Rümlang or at KIBAG in Bassersdorf. It is then transported to the airport (transport time approximately 20 minutes). The concrete has a workable time between 70 and 90 minutes, precisely coordinated for transport and placement. Approximately one hour after the end of the open time, the concrete achieves a strength of about 20 MPa. By 4:45 a.m. and 6 a.m., the runway, aprons, and taxiways are ready for operation and traffic. Thanks to Concretum® Q-FLASH 2/20 concrete, Zurich Airport can perform maintenance on its airside pavements without disrupting air traffic.
